Murphy & Nye

Murphy&Nye is one of the oldest and most prestigious brand names in world yachting. It dates back to the distant days of 1933, when Jim Murphy and Harry Nye Jr. founded Murphy&Nye Sailmakers in Chicago, which was to remain a benchmark in international competitive sailing for over 50 years.

With the arrival of the 1950s, from its loft premises in Elston Avenue, Murphy&Nye made its first foray into the world of clothing: hand-made, using the same techniques and materials that went into its sails, these first garments were a proud homage from the sailmakers to a boat-owner, for whose yacht they had made the sails just weeks before.

The tradition continued into the 1980s, when a small shop, connected to the sail factory in La Spezia, was opened by the company's Italian subsidiary, which in the meantime had bought the brand name from its American parent company. The shop soon became a regular port of call for yachtsmen, who flocked there from all over Europe to buy Murphy&Nye clothing. And so it was that the Murphy&Nye Sailwear line came into being, along with the idea of distributing it through quayside chandlers.

In 1993 the Murphy&Nye brand was acquired by Sixty Group, one of the most active and dynamic entities in the international fashion sector. Over the years, the Sailwear line has been complemented with outdoor and leisure collections, and the Murphy&Nye range now includes men's, women's, junior's and footwear lines.

Design, attention to detail and performance that only special materials can offer: these are the hallmarks of Murphy&Nye, a name that has always stood for a practical and informal, yet original and discerning style of clothing.
